John Andrew Yursin was born on 29 June 1858 in Austria, Hungary. His native language was Slovenian. He emigrated to the United States in 1881 and became a naturalized citizen in 1891.

In 1887, John married Mary Bocko. In 1920, the couple were living in Hazleton, Pennsylvania where John was working as a coal miner.

John died in Hazleton on 5 April 1928.
